The American Society of Breast Surgeons is seeking applications for a volunteer Managing Editor of the next Breast Education and Self-Assessment Program (BESAP®). BESAP is a web-based self-assessment CME learning tool for surgeons who treat breast disease. The program was developed to:

  • Help participating physicians ensure a mastery of critical content for the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease.
  • Provide a significant fund of knowledge that can be used in breast fellowship programs.
  • Identify gaps of knowledge that exist with the breast surgeon, and, in turn, help generate educational content to address them.
  • Serve as an option for surgeons to obtain the self-assessment credits necessary to fulfill the American Board of Surgery's Continuous Certification requirements for recertification.

BESAP Managing Editor

Vacancies: 1 (Active/Associate Member)

Term: 3 Years (Starting October 2023)


Managing Editor Responsibilities:

  • Build and manage a highly functional team of section editors and question writers
  • Engage and coordinate multidisciplinary colleagues who will contribute to key sections
  • Oversees all working group activities holding them accountable to producing high quality content respecting deadlines
  • Ultimately responsible for the accuracy and content produced
  • Selects and works with the BESAP editorial board to develop process and ensure completeness, accuracy, and relevance of the final content of BESAP
  • Works with Medical Editing staff to create content strategies and oversees their implementation processes
  • Provide final revisions on content pieces to ensure they meet certain guidelines
  • Provide updates to the Society's board of directors and liaison
  • Serve a three-year term beginning in October 2023

Qualified Applicants Will:

  • Be an active or associate member of the society in good standing
  • Be familiar with and/or completed ASBrS BESAP I, II and/or BESAP III
  • Have experience in developing continuous medical educational (CME) materials including self-assessment tools for practicing breast surgeons
  • Possess strong leadership skills and the ability to manage complex projects and timelines
  • Have sufficient volunteer time to fulfill the responsibilities for program development and delivery
  • Be familiar with or willing to learn the American Board of Surgery (ABS) Continuous Certification program requirements, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and American Medical Association Physician's Recognition Award (AMA PRA) guidelines and criteria
