The ASBrS 2017 keynote speaker is Professor Frederik Wenz from Mannheim, Germany.  Professor Wenz has been the director of the Department of Radiotherapy and Radiation Oncology at the University Medical Center in Mannheim since 2000, has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Claudia von Schilling Prize in 2010 and the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region’s 2011 Innovation Award for his pioneering work in the development of intraoperative radiation.

Dr. Wenz received his medical degree from the University of Heidelberg in 1992 after studies in medicine and physics in Heidelberg, Birmingham, San Antonio, and Chicago. He performed experimental work for his MD thesis at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, where he also started his internship in diagnostic radiology. He moved to the University of Heidelberg for a residency in radiation oncology. After performing a fellowship in cancer biology at the Harvard School of Public Health, he was promoted to attending at Heidelberg University. In 2000, he became professor and chairman in the department of radiation oncology at the University Medical Center Mannheim, University of Heidelberg.

Dr. Wenz has published more than 400 peer review journal papers and edited 6 text books. He served as an editorial board member in several journals. His clinical specialties are breast and prostate cancer, while his research interests are focussed on novel technologies like intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image guided radiotherapy (IGRT), stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR), intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT), and radioprotective gene-therapeutic approaches.
