Scientific Research Award Recipients

Awards were presented on April 16 to the following 3 researchers at the 17th Annual Meeting of The American Society of Breast Surgeons for their outstanding Scientific Session presentations:


Scientific Recognition Award

Jennifer Mirrielees, was named winner of the Society's 2016 Scientific Recognition Award by the Society's Publications Committee for her presentation of 'Re-excision Rates After Breast Conservation Surgery in the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS) Mastery Database Following the SSO-ASTRO 'No Tumor on Ink' Guidelines.' The Award recognizes an outstanding presentation by a resident or fellow. Ms. Mirrielees, of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, presented the research as part of the Scientific Program oral presentations. Her co-authors were Drs. Amanda Schulman, Caprice Greenberg, Jeffrey Landercasper, Lee Wilke.


George N. Peters Award

Jennifer Plichta, MD, was named the 2016 George Peters Award winner for her presentation of 'Application of the 2015 ACS and ASBS Screening Mammography Guidelines: Risk Assessment Is Critical for Women Ages 40-44.' This award recognizes the best presentation by a breast fellow, as determined by the Society's Publications Committee. Dr. Plichta, a breast surgery fellow at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital, received the Peters Award for her presentation during the scientific session on April 16. Dr. Plichta's co-authors were Drs. Suzanne Coopey, Michelle Specht, Michele Gadd, Erin Sullivan, Constance Roche, Barbara Smith and Kevin Hughes.


Scientific Impact Award

Pat Whitworth, MD of the Nashville Breast Center, received the Scientific Impact Award at the Society's 17th Annual Meeting for his presentation of 'A Prospective, Single-Arm, Multi-Site, Clinical Evaluation of a Nonradioactive Surgical Guidance Technology for the Location of Nonpalpable Breast Lesions During Excision.' The Scientific Impact Award is given to the oral presenter whose research is judged by audience vote to have the greatest scientific impact. Dr. Whitworth's co-authors were Drs. Charles Cox, Peter Blumencranz, Pat Whitworth, Kristi Funk, Julie Barone Alice Police, Freya Schnabel, Beth Anglin, Lynn Canavan, Alison Laidley, Mary Jane Warden, Scott Russell, Ebonie Carter, Jeff King and Steven Shivers. All awards are supported by The American Society of Breast Surgeons Foundation.
