Humanism in Medicine Award

The Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award is presented to a practicing physician who has been selected by The American Society of Breast Surgeons based on the following criteria:

  • demonstrates compassion and empathy in the delivery of patient care
  • displays competence in scientific endeavors
  • shows respect for patients, families and co-workers
  • demonstrates cultural sensitivity in working with patients and family members of diverse backgrounds
  • displays effective, empathetic communication and listening skills
  • understands a patient’s need for interpretation of complex medical diagnoses and treatments and makes an effort to ensure patient comprehension
  • understands and shows respect for the patient’s viewpoint
  • is sensitive to the patient’s psychological well-being; and identifies emotional concerns of patients and family members
  • engenders trust and confidence

Each recipient is presented with a monetary award of $1,000 to attend The American Society of Breast Surgeons 19th Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL where the award will be presented.

To be considered, please submit your application by February 1, 2018 to  Nominees must be members of ASBrS who are residents in the United States or Canada.  All applications must include the following:

  • Completed application form.
  • An essay of no more than 1 page providing a narrative for why the nominee should be chosen.
  • No more than 3 letters of support from colleagues and/or patients.
  • A cv is optional and may be included in the application.

All applications will be blinded for review by the awards selection working group.
