Certification demonstrates a dedication to quality patient care and public safety through adherence to established standards for performance and training in oncoplastic surgery. The program offers a means of recognition to individual surgeons who meet criteria in the areas of clinical experience, training, and quality assurance. Program Goals

The American Society of Breast Surgeons recognizes the leading role of surgeons as providers of clinical expertise in management of patients with breast abnormalities. A major goal of the Society's oncoplastic certification program is to improve the quality of care for patients with breast disease by encouraging education and training to advance expertise and clinical competency for surgeons who utilize oncoplastic procedures in their practices.

Prerequisites

  • Certification by the American Board of Surgery, American Osteopathic Board of Surgery, American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (with recognized breast surgical fellowship) or evidence of international equivalent.
  • A documented appropriate level of training and minimum of 1-year experience in the performance of oncoplastic procedures, including Crescent and Donut Mastopexy.
  • A minimum annual procedure volume of 20 breast oncoplastic procedures.
  • A minimum of 20 AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credits™ in oncoplastic surgery as outlined below.

CME Requirements

A minimum of 20 AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credits™ in oncoplastic surgery is required for certification. Of these credits, the applicant must document successful completion of at least 2 Oncoplastic Surgery courses. Each course must include a didactic portion (in-person or virtual) as well as an in-person “hands-on” portion demonstrating oncoplastic surgical procedures. Applicants must upload their course certificates or the CME attestations provided to participants. Additional details:

  • At least 1 course must be an ASBrS Oncoplastic Surgery course.
  • The full requirement can be met by attending 2 ASBrS Beginner Oncoplastics courses or 1 beginner and 1 intermediate ASBrS Oncoplastics course.
  • Applicants may claim credit for courses in which he or she has participated as a faculty member.
  • ASBrS offers several options for earning the required CME: ASBrS CME Opportunities 
  • Non-ASBrS course consideration: Request Approval 

Certification Program Fees

  • A $50 application access fee will be charged when starting the clinical application.
  • A $600 review fee is due upon submission of the completed clinical application.
  • A $200 online examination fee

Certification Process

There are 2 components to the certification process: Clinical Application and Online Examination. Applicants may complete in any order, but each must be completed within the same 2-year period.
