This self-paced, online course introduces breast surgical oncology fellows to the foundational skills, strategies, and pathways needed to start and engage in meaningful research during fellowship and beyond. This course will remain accessible to members in the 2025–2026 fellowship cohort through July 27, 2026.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, fellows will be able to:

  • Understand how to build a research program through participation in cooperative group trials
  • Describe steps to writing successful funding application and research proposals
  • Describe opportunities for research partnership with industry
  • Understand methods to form successful partnerships with basic scientists
  • Outline steps to design and open an investigator initiated clinical trial
  • Describe research pathways in academic and community practice settings
  • Identify opportunities for early research involvement
  • Outline steps to develop high impact studies using outcomes data
  • Understand how to incorporate patient reported outcomes into clinical research
  • Apply foundational principles of study
