2022 Annual Meeting Meeting Banner

Welcome from the Program Chair

Carla S. Fisher, MD, MBA, FACS

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of our society president, Julie Margenthaler, MD, the Board of Directors, and the Annual Meeting Committee, I invite you to join us at the 23rd Annual Meeting of The American Society of Breast Surgeons! Our 2022 meeting, including the pre-meeting program, will be held Wednesday, April 6, through Sunday, April 10, at the beautiful Wynn in Las Vegas, Nevada. We have an exciting program planned, so please save these dates on your calendar now!

General Session

I am delighted to announce that we will be welcoming as our keynote speaker V. Suzanne Klimberg, MD, PhD, MSHCT, FACS. Dr. Klimberg has pioneered innovative breast cancer treatment methods, authoring over 350 publications in peer-reviewed journals. By sharing her knowledge and expertise, Dr. Klimberg will inspire us to continually improve the practice of breast surgery to benefit our patients.

As part of our emphasis on surgical innovation, the John Wayne Cancer Institute’s Critical Issues in Breast Cancer Forum will feature topics such as the ethics of delaying surgery, screening delays, impact of COVID-19 on timing of multigene assays, and the same day mastectomy. The Surgical Innovation Forum, supported by the ASBrS Foundation through a grant from the Melvin and Lynna Silverstein Giving Fund, will feature topics such as inflammatory breast cancer, the role for surgery after neoadjuvant care, surgery for stage IV disease, and supraclavicular and contralateral axillary disease management.

The program follows a patient’s course through diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. We will focus on value in delivering care and feature presentations and discussions on decreasing cost in our practices and the cost of care, de-escalation of therapy, review the types of imaging to use and when, have great debates on pertinent issues in breast surgery, hear oral presentations on the latest research, and view additional research in our poster session. Our annual “How I Do It” video session, featuring surgical tips and tricks, is also in the main program. You will also be able to see the latest technology in our Exhibit Hall and network with colleagues during breaks and social functions.

Pre-Meeting Courses

You will not want to miss out on the excellent pre-meeting courses on April 6 and April 7. Take advantage of these educational opportunities by registering for courses on one or both of these days.

We will once again feature both beginner and intermediate level oncoplastic skills courses, including cadaver labs. We will also include the always popular courses in introductory breast ultrasound, stereotactic breast biopsy, management of the high-risk patient and benign breast disease. We are very excited to offer a new course on DCIS controversies.

CME and CC

The 2022 general session and pre-meeting courses provide an opportunity to earn up to 35.75 AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credit(s)™ but will also include the self-assessment activities necessary to claim up to 15.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credit(s)™ towards the American Board of Surgery Continuous Certification (CC) program.

Las Vegas and Wynn

Located in the heart of Las Vegas, Wynn Resorts holds more Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Awards than any other independent hotel company in the world. The resort offers award-winning restaurants from casual to fine dining, exciting entertainment, and nightlife, golf-club, two award-winning spas, salons, and luxury shopping. Guests can enjoy the Lake of Dreams, a free nightly show, featuring music and imagery created by over 4000 lights, stunning holographics and puppetry.

And keep in mind, if your family or friends will be traveling with you, there’s no end of activities in the city to keep them entertained. Expect world-class shopping, dining, and entertainment, and don’t forget, Las Vegas is also a great base from which to visit such spectacular sites as Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon. Take a look at lasvegas.com/attractions to learn more about what Las Vegas and the surrounding area have to offer.

Plan Ahead

You’ll find, as always, an incredibly packed agenda for the entire week. I encourage you to review the schedule and see the topics and speakers we have assembled. I hope you will find that we have achieved our goal of providing focused content designed specifically to meet the needs of surgeons who are committed to constantly raising the standard of breast care. Make sure to review the Sunday program before booking your flight home so you do not miss out on the important topics being presented including survivorship, benign breast disease and creating longevity for the breast surgeon.

So, make plans now to join us and our colleagues at a unique meeting designed to meet the educational needs and interests of surgeons and other health care professionals who treat breast disease.

I look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas, Nevada, for #ASBRS22!! And remember, what happens in Vegas … we take home and incorporate into our practices for the best quality of care for our patients!

Sincerely,

Carla S. Fisher, MD, MBA, FACS
