ASBrS Responds to CMS Proposed Physician Fee Schedule Changes
In July, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released its proposed calendar year (CY) 2026 rule for the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS). These proposals carry significant implications for surgeons and patient care, and the American Society of Breast Surgeons is responding firmly.
ASBrS strongly opposed the proposed cuts to practice expense relative value units (RVUs) and a new “efficiency adjustment” that would reduce work RVUs by 2.5% in 2026 and beyond. These changes rely on flawed assumptions that procedures take less time, despite published evidence showing surgical times are increasing. ASBrS also urged CMS to preserve the current structure of surgical global codes safeguarding them from devaluation. We encourage members to review the full comment letter to see the complete scope of our response.
