Course Description:

Genetic testing is an integral part of the practice of surgery, and breast surgeons have been leaders in this area. The purpose of this course is to help surgeons bring this vital service into their practice and feel comfortable offering genetic testing at the Point of Care. While breast surgeons feel very comfortable managing a patient with a breast cancer susceptibility gene, the culture has been that genetic testing is outside their purview. We will try to simplify and demystify the testing process, discuss the latest advances in cancer genetics and give an overview of management of the testing results, with the goal of bringing more genetic testing to the point of care and maximizing the benefit for our patients.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Participants will be able to discuss who needs genetic testing and how to implement genetics into their practice
  • Participants will be able to list guidelines for screening high risk women, and will understand barriers to high-risk screening
  • Participants will increase their competence in establishing a hereditary cancer clinic
  • Participants will be able to understand future directions in automation as it relates to genetics
